Daily Transportation and G.O.O.D.

November 20th, 2006 · No Comments

Daily commuting in a big city has it’s fair share of urban offroading situations. Here in the cities near the Gulf of Mexico, tropical downpours with slow runoff turn urban streets into rivers and newscasts often show the heroic rescue (hopefully) of people stranded in their vehicles. I have decided to upgrade my current vehicle to a larger cargo load and heavier towing capacity. It will still need to be able to jump curbs, handle minor flash flooding, run over potholes, and make a new urban trail when needed.

I have enjoyed owning my second Jeep Wrangler for the past 5 years. But, my family and needs have expanded to two people, 3 large dogs, and two motorcycles we would like to tow on a trailer from time to time. The long range plan is also to have a secure and reliable form of transportation to “Get Out Of Dodge” (G.O.O.D.) should we ever need to evacuate from a Hurricane. We have been taking steps to be more secure and stay in our home except in the worst of scenarios, but having a back-up plan is essential.

At a minimum, the vehicle should seat two comfortably, having a towing hitch, roof rack, and room for dogs inside a sheltered and air-conditioned area. Fuel capacity and the ability to carry extra fuel cans is required along with cargo area to comfortably carry extra water, food, and valuables of the house along with basic clothing and comfort items for all. The Jeep has met the minimum requirement to jump curbs, make a new exit ramp from the freeway, and manage a puddle or two. But, it just doesn’t hold all of the family and stuff comfortably anymore. Looks like the Jeep is in need of a new home. If you are wondering what goes into a GOOD vehicle, there are lots of packing lists available on the internet. I will be posting a few of my own soon.
